Missouri Governor Matt Blunt (in title only)
Last session the Missouri legislature passed HCR-20 which would exempt Missouri from having to participate in the Real ID act:
HCR-20 "prohibits the state implementation of the federal REAL ID Act of 2005 which requires uniform driver's licenses or state identification cards" was passed in the Missouri Senate on May 14th,2007 by a vote of 32 for and 0 against, and in the Missouri House on May 17th, 2007 by a vote of 148 for and 3 against. The bill is a great victory for States Rights.
HCR-20 rightly calls the REAL ID ACT :"an attempt to "commandeer" the political machinery of the states and to require the states to be agents of the federal government, in violation of the principles of federalism contained in the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, as interpreted by the United States Supreme Court in New York v. Governor Blunt has until July 14th to sign HCR-20 into law. All indications are that he will not do so.
Today I tried unsuccessfully, for the third day in a row, to find out why the Governor won't sign a bill that our elected officials on both sides of the aisle felt was so important.
When the same secretary answered the phone as in my previous two attempts, she tried to tell me that HCR -20 was Federal legislation, and therefore Governor Blunt would not sign it.
When I informed her that HCR-20 was State legislation and provided her with the details , she quickly "transferred" my call to a voicemail… again.
As of today, July 11, 2007, the Governor’s office still had not returned any of my phone calls.
While the Governor has found the time to sign into law bills that would designate Big Bluestem as the official state grass and the crayfish as the official state invertebrate, it appears that he has no time to sign into law a bill that would protect Missouri from unconstitutional federal legislation.
My instincts, tell me that President Bush is ruling Missouri with an iron fist by proxy, through Governor Blunt’s father, Roy Blunt, a known Bush crony.
