Missouri Republicans and Illegal Immigration (They go hand in hand)

Missouri Republicans sure do love their illegal immigration. All you have to do is crack open a paper and the proof is there. Sure, sometimes you have to dig for it, but its there. For instance, today's Southeast Missourian newspaper carries a headline that reads: 'Mo. Senators Pass $66 million dollar Tax Break Package' . In it you will find that...

"Republican senators also upheld a ruling by Senate President Pro Tem Michael Gibbons, R-Kirkwood, that barred consideration of a Democratic amendment penalizing any developer, contractor or subcontractor for employing illegal immigrants on a project receiving tax credits under the bill. "

This however; should come as no surprise. All we have to do is go back to the words written in a 2005 Press Release from the KC Smartport website...

"KANSAS CITY – Dec. 7, 2005 – Missouri Governor Matt Blunt and key economic leadership from Missouri, Kansas City SmartPort and Kansas City Southern traveled to Mexico this week to meet with Mexican President, Vicente Fox, as well as other key leadership in the country, to express their commitment to the Mexican Customs facility to be located in Kansas City. The facility would be the first of its kind on U.S. soil.

“My top priority is to create new jobs and investment in Missouri,” said Blunt. “Tapping into the global economy and solidifying our already strong trade relationship with Mexico are keys in achieving greater economic success for our state.”

Apparently, our good (Republican) Governor's idea of cooperating with Mexico is letting whoever the want to send to our state in. His idea of helping our economy is to turn a blind eye to any information that contractors in our state are hiring the illegals.

Of course sometimes, the information is in plain site. For instance, Rep. Nathan Cooper is in the news again today. If you will remember Cooper was the Republican representative from Cape Girardeau, who got busted in an immigration scheme, which supplied fraudulent work visas to illegal immigrant truck drivers. Today we learn that...

"Former state representative Nathan Cooper, free on bond pending sentencing on immigration charges, on Wednesday asked U.S. District Judge Jean C. Hamilton for permission to take a two-week trip to the Philippines.

Hamilton did not rule on the request, but Cooper's attorney said government opposition to the request will kill it. "

And just why was Cooper wanting to travel to the Phillipines?

"Crowe said Schwartz had mistaken his stance following a discussion of numerous issues related to the case. Crowe said he wasn't sure about the nature of the trip. "My sense is he was going to do some immigration business."

Immigration business eh? It should come as no surprise. Despite House Speaker Jetton's series of articles about how to fix illegal immigration, it is important to remember that , not even a year ago, Rod Jetton stated...

“Quite frankly, a lot of people don't like to hear it, but we need good workers in our state. In the whole nation, we're short. I talk to business owners and companies all the time, and our unemployment rate is about as low as it can be”- Interview with “The Pitch” website  October 12, 2006: http://www.pitch.com/Issues/2006-10-12/news/backwash.html
