Electric Rodeo; it's the perfect way to describe Shooter Jennings' musical sound and it just happens to be the name of his new CD.
For those of you who don't know it, "Shooter" is the son of the late great Waylon Jennings.
Though his voice isn't quite on par with his daddy's , he certainly isn't lacking any of the soul and sometimes, for just a second, Waylon's voice comes shining through as Shooter belts out traditional country tunes, mixed with Southern Rock and other songs that sound like they could have came blaring from an FM radio station in the 1970's.
A warning to those who are a bit timid; Shooter isn't afraid to call it like he sees it, as in "The Song Is Still Slippin' Away" in which Shooter very accurately observes, sometimes , "your heroes turn out to be assholes and the lite in the tunnel that your chasing is a train".
"Gone To Carolina", is a Southern Rock Ballad that got quite a bit airplay both on country radio and CMT as well as GAC country music video stations. It is particularly refreshing to have seen Shooter wearin' his leather biker vest with a Confederate Battle Flag , proudly on his back in an era when so many other artist (who claim to be Southern Rockers) have shelved the banner.
"Hair of the Dog", is a perfect example of Shooter Jennings blending Southern Rock with a country theme..."This whole life will test me. It's a curse and a blessing. A glimpse of where, my daddy stood. I drank all last night, till the crack of dawn. I was drinkin' to, my favorite country song. And it won't be long, till I'm feelin' gone. I woke up this mornin' to the hair of the dog"
"Some Rowdy Women" is classic Waylon, and Shooter does a fine job following in his daddy's foot steps..."Well the songs I make, they ain't for livin'. And the things I take, they ain't forgivin'. I'd gladly trade all my, big city livin', for some rowdy women in a honky tonk tonight"
"It Ain't Easy" is Shooter's latest single and in it he reveals that he hasn't forgotten his daddy, or the lessons that he taught him..."When I was just a young boy, my daddy came to me. Said now son out in this world there's alot of things gonna make you feel like your supposed to be. You don't have to read the Good Book to be a good man just the same. And forget about the money. Money ain't brought nothin' to your daddy but pain. It ain't easy, but you'll be alright." Shooter continues by proving that he's not like the same "cookie cutter" artists that country radio has opted to play these days, as classic works from artists like Waylon gather dust..."Now it's 15 years later and I'm out here on the road. And it's been 4 years to the day he died and they won't even play his on the radio. And I think I've found my way alright without him here to catch me now and again."
It might not have been easy for him, but Shooter has delivered a work of pure genius, go out and get ya a copy today, sit back, have a beer and relax.
